Wasp & Hornet Nest Removal

A wasp nest found in May and the same nest found in August are not the same problem: in between, the colony has gone from a few dozen individuals to several thousand, and its defensive aggression has changed entirely. The date, as much as the location, determines the method and the risk level. Wasp, hornet, or bee: never destroy a bee colony

The honeybee is hairy, stocky, golden brown, and moves slowly from flower to flower. A bee colony is not destroyed: it is recovered, and a beekeeper often does it free. The wasp is hairless, slender, with a marked waist and a nervous flight; the hornet is simply a large wasp, capable of repeated stings since its sting is not barbed. We systematically identify the species before any work, and we decline to treat a bee colony. The distinction has immediate practical consequences: a hive in a wall is handled by recovery and sealing, never with insecticide — treatment would leave kilos of decomposing honey inside the structure.

Aerial, cavity, and underground nests: three risk levels

The aerial nest hanging from a branch or under a balcony is the simplest case: the colony is visible, access is direct, the job takes about thirty minutes, and the nest leaves with us. The cavity nest — behind siding, in a soffit, under exterior trim — shows only an entry point while the colony extends into an unknown volume; treatment must reach the brood chamber, not just the opening. The underground nest, usually a yellowjacket colony in an old burrow, is the most dangerous: invisible until you hit it while mowing, with an immediate and massive defensive reaction. It is the configuration that sends the most people to emergency rooms in Quebec each summer.

Why the hardware-store aerosol fails so often

An aerosol sprays a few metres and kills the individuals it reaches. On an exposed aerial nest, in the evening, with the right technique, it can work. On a cavity nest, the product reaches the entrance but not the brood chamber: workers die, the queen survives, the colony rebuilds in ten to fifteen days. Worse, partial treatment scatters part of the colony, which rebuilds a satellite nest a few metres away, often less accessible than the first. The most dangerous mistake remains sealing the entrance of a cavity nest: wasps look for another way out, frequently find one toward the building interior, and an entire colony emerges into an occupied room. Caulking happens only after complete elimination, never before.

After elimination: nest removal and spring prevention

An eliminated colony never returns to the same nest: wasps do not reuse a previous year's structure. Removing the empty nest is therefore not urgent, but we recommend it for two concrete reasons: it retains a scent signature attractive to a swarm the following year, and it harbours carpet beetle larvae that readily migrate to indoor textiles. Real prevention happens in April and May, when a founding queen searches alone for shelter: at that point, sealing soffit openings, screening roof and dryer vents, and inspecting previously used cavities avoids a full nest in August. An entry point closed in spring costs a few dollars; the same nest treated in September costs an intervention.

Can we wait for the first frost?

Yes, if the nest is away from any traffic area and no occupant is allergic: the colony dies naturally in October. No, if it sits near a door, a patio, children's play equipment, or inside an occupied wall. Where an occupant has a known allergy, intervention is never optional.

Do you work in the evening?

Yes, and it is our standard window for nests. At dusk the whole colony is inside and flight activity is nil: it is the only window in which treatment reaches every individual in a single visit.

How long before activity stops?

For an aerial nest treated in the evening, activity stops within hours. For a cavity nest, expect twenty-four to forty-eight hours: foragers absent at treatment time return the next day and encounter the residual product.

What should I do after multiple stings?

Move away from the area quickly without sudden movements, and seek medical care immediately for numerous stings, a sting in the mouth or throat, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or dizziness. These are medical situations, not pest control ones.
