Ant Treatment

Crushing ants does not reduce a colony: visible workers represent under ten percent of the population, the rest being in the nest with the queen. As long as the queen lays, the colony rebuilds indefinitely. Any serious treatment therefore targets the nest, not the individuals in transit. That explains why spraying a surface insecticide often makes matters worse: it kills foragers, cuts the chemical trail, and triggers colony budding into multiple satellite nests.

Carpenter, pharaoh, or field ant: three distinct problems

The carpenter ant is the only one of the three that causes structural damage: it does not eat wood but excavates smooth galleries to house its colony, favouring wood dampened by a leak. Its presence therefore often signals a water problem to correct in parallel. The pharaoh ant, tiny and yellowish, is the nightmare of apartment buildings and healthcare facilities: it buds at the slightest chemical aggression, and one spray turns a single nest into twelve. The field ant nests outdoors and enters only to forage; its treatment is perimeter-based and almost never justifies indoor work. Misdiagnosing these three leads systematically to a failed treatment.

Locating the parent nest and its satellites

Locating the nest is the most time-consuming part of the job and the one that decides the outcome. We follow foraging trails at peak activity — early morning and evening for carpenter ants — and look for physical evidence: fine sawdust and wing fragments at the base of a wall, a rasping sound inside a warm partition, condensation or a moisture ring on a ceiling. A mature carpenter ant colony has a parent nest, often outdoors in a stump or dead tree, plus several satellite nests inside the building. Treating only the satellite you found settles the symptom for one season. That is why our inspection systematically covers the grounds, not just the building.

Transfer bait rather than spraying

The method that reaches the queen is delayed-action bait. A worker carries it to the nest, shares it by trophallaxis with the larvae and the queen, and the colony collapses from within over a few days to two weeks. It is slower than spraying — visible activity even rises in the first days, which worries clients — but it is the only approach that eliminates the source. We adjust the formulation to the season: colonies seek sugars in spring and proteins in late summer, and a sweet bait placed in August is simply ignored. Spraying keeps a role, but only as an outdoor barrier and never on indoor trails, which it would destroy at the very moment we need them.

Correcting moisture, or the colony returns

A carpenter ant does not settle in sound, dry wood: it seeks wood softened by water. Every recurring infestation we see has an upstream water cause — an overflowing gutter, a failed chimney flashing, a deck in direct contact with siding, condensation in an unvented crawl space, or simply firewood stacked against the house. We document these sources in the inspection report with a priority level, because it is the part of the job that is not ours but determines whether the treatment holds for three years or one season. Add to that simple measures: trim branches to more than two metres from the roof, keep a thirty-centimetre gap between mulch and foundation.

Winged ants indoors — is that serious?

Yes, if they emerge from inside the building. Winged ants are the reproductives a mature colony releases in spring; their emergence indoors means a nest has been established in the structure for at least two years. If they come in through a window from outside, it is inconsequential.

Do carpenter ants eat wood?

No. They excavate galleries to live in and push the sawdust outside — that fine deposit, mixed with insect fragments, is what gives them away. The damage is real but gradual, over several years, and not comparable to termite damage.

Why do we see more ants after treatment?

That is the expected behaviour with transfer bait: foraging activity rises for two to five days because workers are actively carrying the product to the nest. A marked drop follows within the week. Do not spray insecticide during that phase — it would cancel the transfer.

Is the treatment safe for pets?

Baits are placed in closed stations or in inaccessible cracks, out of reach. For the outdoor barrier we recommend keeping pets away for the indicated drying time, generally two to four hours. All products are Health Canada-approved.
